Description

On Episode 4 of "MMA Rewind", hosted by MMA commentator, regulator, and historian Sean Wheelock, UFC 28 is discussed. Sean is joined by the Dean of MMA managers Monte Cox, whose clients have included Pat Miletich, Rich Franklin, Jeremy Horn, Tim Sylvia, and Matt Hughes; and by Chris "Lights Out" Lytle, who fought 20 times in the UFC, and also recorded wins in his fighting career in pro boxing and bare knuckle fighting.

UFC 28 took place 20 years ago (November 17, 2000) in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and is historically significant as the first UFC event held under the Unified Rules of MMA; the first UFC event held on the East Coast since 1995's UFC 7 in Buffalo, New York; and the second to last UFC event under the ownership of Bob Meyrowitz.

The event marked the UFC debut of Chris Lytle, and featured Randy Couture defeating then champion Kevin Randleman for the UFC Heavyweight Title in the Main Event. Also on the card were three Monte Cox clients: Jens Pulver, Mark Hughes, and Ben Earwood as well as Andre Arlovski, Babalu Sobral, Josh Barnett, Alex Stiebling, and Maurice Smith.

Seam, Monte, and Chris discuss the atmosphere surrounding UFC 28, as it was nearly dead under the ownership of Meyrowitz and this era of MMA, when there was bigger money to be made outside of the UFC in promotions such as Pride and Pancrase, and fights to be had virtually every month across the US Midwest.

Produced exclusively for FITE, "MMA Rewind" is a video podcast series, which looks back at famous and infamous MMA events, presenting never-before-told, behind-the scenes stories from the people who were there.
